After the photo finish tiebreaker, Nichol Pareja had to settle for 16th place, but that was still good enough to earn the Best Asian Rider award, beating out Kazakhstan’s Andray Zeits and Mongolia’s Jambaljamts Sainbayar.
Both Sainbayar and Zeits wound up in the peloton group that crossed the finish line almost 70 seconds behind the winner of Stage 7, Sjoerd Bax of the Netherlands.
In the end, Zeits prevailed over Sainbayar in the photo finish, but Sainbayar is still the current Asian leader in the tour and wears the white jacket. Sainbayar leads Zeits in the general classification standings by one second with one stage remaining, which is a 115.9-kilometer circuit race on Tuesday that will begin and end in Kuah.
The Philippine team, which also includes Marcelo Felipe, Rench Bondoc, Marco Lumanog, John Salazar, and Junreck Carcueva, has maintained its position as the best performing national team in the competition. The Philippine team is currently ahead of the host nation, Malaysia, by a little more than an hour in terms of total finishing time.
